Nyberg Creek Wetland

Location Tualatin, Oregon.  SW Nyberg Street between I-5 & 65th Avenue.
Acres 13
Steward Ed Casey

This wetland lies on the south side of Nyberg Creek, which runs past the Fred Meyer Shopping Center, under I-5 and eastward to it’s confluence with the Tualatin River in Browns Ferry Park. This was a reed-canary grass monoculture which was excavated to create open water ponds adjacent to Nyberg Creek. Fish that swim up Nyberg Creek from the Tualatin River provide food for heron, fish eating ducks, kingfishers and an occasional Osprey. Canada geese, mallards and beaver frequent this wetland and baby ducks and geese are common during spring.

Restoration and Enhancements

A series of ponds was excavated as mitigation for the strip development along Nyberg Road.

Access

There is no access into the marsh itself.  The best way to view the marsh is from a small shopping center on Nyberg Road.  Look for El Sol De Mexico Restaurant and the balcony overlooking the marsh.  This is an excellent site for handicapped viewers — the balcony is elevated for over-all viewing. It is also a great place for a good Mexican dinner or lunch, as many of the windows at El Sol de Mexico look out over the marsh.

How to Get There

Take I-5 south to Tualatin exit #289. Left on Nyberg Road over the freeway. Look for the shopping center on the right. Park near the west end of the center. The balcony overlooking the marsh is through the buildings beneath the "700 Nyberg" sign.

Public Transit

Tri-met line #76 to Meridian Park Hospital. Walk about a mile back down 65th Ave to Nyberg Road and the shopping area.
